The National Institutes Ranking Framework (NIRF) is an annual ranking and classification exercise undertaken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The framework was approved by the MHRD on September 29, 2015. The objective of the framework is to enable a systematic and global comparison of Indian institutes on the basis of specific "Parameter" The NIRF ranking process comprises of data collection from institutes, voluntariness of institutes, peer perception, self-declaration and finally announcement of the ranking by an independent and credible body. The ministry had constituted an Expert Committee, headed by Dr. Tarun Khanna, Director of the Harvard University, to prepare the framework and process. The framework provides a comprehensive outlook of the performance of an institute across several parameters and grants a detailed rank to each institute. The Parameters and their break-up for Engineering Institutions are given below: -Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) (500) -Research and Professional Practice (RPP) (500) -Graduation Outcomes (GO) (500) -Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) (500) -Perception (PR) (100) TheTeaching, Learning & Resources parameter is assessed on the basis of faculty-student ratio, staff, students, infrastructure, learning resources, andlastly, the research output. The Research and Professional Practice parameter assesses the research income, professionalpractice income, research publications, patents filed, citation, and finally, the impact of research. The Graduation Outcome parameter assesses placements, higher studies, and Entrepreneurship. The Outreach and Inclusivity parameter assesses the region-wise and gender-wise diversity of the student and faculty population. The Perception parameter is assessed on the basis of a survey of various experts in the field of education.
