**Nottingham Forest Striker Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma After Emergency Surgery; Club Defends Owner Amidst Controversy**

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery, the club confirmed, after sustaining a serious injury during Sunday's Premier League match against Leicester City. The incident has ignited considerable debate regarding the decision to allow the Nigerian international to continue playing, and has prompted a robust defence from the club concerning owner Evangelos Marinakis's subsequent on-pitch actions.

Awoniyi, 27

suffered the severe abdominal injury late in the 2-2 draw at the City Ground after colliding with a goalpost. He received several minutes of on-pitch treatment before medical staff permitted him to rejoin the action. However, the gravity of his condition was reportedly fully identified by the club's medical team on Monday night, leading to his urgent admission to hospital where he underwent the emergency surgical procedure.

  • According to information obtained by the PA news agency, the induced coma
  •  is a medically advised measure intended to aid his recovery by minimising
  •  movement and helping to regulate his heart rate. Nottingham Forest has
  •  stated that Awoniyi's condition is not considered life-threatening and, in a
  •  statement released on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed he is "recovering well."

The circumstances surrounding Awoniyi's injury

and its immediate aftermath have become a focal point of controversy. Scrutiny was initially directed at the medical decision to allow Awoniyi to return to the field. This was then amplified by the actions of club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who was seen on the pitch after the final whistle in an animated discussion with manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

  1. Observers interpreted this as Marinakis expressing his anger that the visibly
  2.  distressed player had been allowed to continue. The owner's intervention
  3.  drew sharp criticism from some quarters, with Sky Sports pundit Gary
  4.  Neville suggesting Nuno should "negotiate his exit" from the club that same
  5.  night.

In a detailed and forceful statement, Nottingham Forest staunchly defended Marinakis's conduct. The club asserted that the owner's reaction was "born out of a deep sense of care, responsibility,

and belonging towards one of our team." The statement elaborated, "For Evangelos Marinakis, this is not just a football club – it is a family... His reaction stemmed from a profound sense of concern... In the last 10 minutes of the match, when he saw our player clearly struggling and in visible pain, it became difficult for him to remain on the sidelines.

" The club described his actions as "instinctive and human" and unequivocally stated that "if such an unfortunate incident were to recur, he would do the same again."

Crucially, Forest vehemently denied any "confrontation" between Marinakis and Nuno or any other staff member. Instead, they characterized the exchange as a manifestation of "shared frustration amongst us all that the medical team should not have allowed the player to continue."

The club then issued a stern rebuke

to external critics and media commentators, urging "former coaches, players, and other public figures in football to resist the temptation to rush to judgment and promote false news online, especially when they do not have the full picture and context.

  • " The statement condemned "unsubstantiated anger, lacking sufficient
  •  knowledge and used for social media engagement," arguing that such
  •  commentary "serves no one — least of all the injured player." Forest
  • concluded by calling on these influential voices to "show the same respect for
  •  player safety that they often demand of others. Let concern precede
  •  comment."

As Taiwo Awoniyi begins his recovery, the club's vigorous defence of its owner and its sharp critique of external commentary have added significant layers to a deeply concerning incident, placing a renewed spotlight on player welfare protocols and the intense pressures within elite football.
