Mbappé and PSG Locked in a High-Stakes Financial Battle Totaling Over $700 Million
At the heart of the conflict
is Mbappé's
demand for over €260 million ($301 million) from PSG.This claim
includes approximately €55 million in what he alleges are unpaid wages and
bonuses. Furthermore, Mbappé is seeking compensation for what his
legal team argues was moral harassment and a breach of good faith by the club. The 26-year-old forward contends that his fixed-term contract should be
reclassified as a permanent one, which would entitle him to further
compensation for what he deems an unfair dismissal.
In a dramatic countermove
PSG has filed a
claim for a massive €440 million ($510 million) against their former star
player.A significant portion of this claim, €180 million, is for
the "loss of opportunity" resulting from Mbappé's refusal to be
transferred to the Saudi club Al-Hilal in July 2023 PSG asserts that
this decision deprived them of a substantial transfer fee.
The Parisian club also accuses Mbappé of disloyalty, alleging that he concealed his intention
not to renew his contract for nearly a year, from July 2022 to June 2023, thereby preventing
the club from arranging a transfer. PSG is also seeking compensation for damages to their
reputation and image.
The dispute traces back to Mbappé's decision not to extend
his contract with PSG, which led to his exclusion from
the team's pre-season tour before the 2023-2024 season. PSG claims a
verbal agreement was made at the time for Mbappé to waive certain bonuses to be
reinstated, a claim Mbappé's representatives deny, stating no evidence of such
an agreement has been provided.
After a record-breaking seven-year tenure
at PSG where he became the club's all-time top scorer with 256 goals, Mbappé
joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer of 2024. The
case is now before the Paris labor court, with a decision anticipated in the
coming month.
